HAPPY SUMMER!! I love mothers! I also know that summer poses a bunch of new challenges for all of us. One of the ways I have been supporting mothers is by giving specialized retreats in my home. I share all of the back story in this post: Giving Retreats, the Rest of the Story, Some women emailed us and asked if we'd consider developing a way for people in others states to hear/see/experience The Mother Retreat. It is June 1, 2022, and I am pleased to announce that I, old Lori Doerneman, have learned new things and I created an ONLINE VERSION of my Mother Retreat just for you. So if you live out of state, or if you’ve been too busy to come to one of these retreats in my home, I have done the work for you and you can just consume this retreat from the comfort of your home. After studying the various ways I could accomplish this, I decided on PowerPoint. Why? Well, here’s the deal. I like the slides that I use for my mother’s retreat. They are my heart. So I wanted to use them. Did you know that PowerPoint has a feature where you can just push a button and record? I was able to use my slides AND have my little talking head in the corner of the slide show, which is the personal touch I wanted. I was shocked to discover how simple it was! I thought I’d have to rig up a big theatrical event. Nope. It was easy, once I figured out that I just had to keep quiet during the slide transition.
(Powerpoint has a delay between each slide. It records the visual but not the audio as I went from slide one to slide two. So I just had to pause and not talk while I switched slides. Sounds easier than it is, especially for someone like me!) My son Eric did get me a special little light and better camera for recording because, well, let’s just say my first attempts were funny. Half of my face was always in the dark, no matter what kind of lighting I used. Okay, so let’s talk about content. What the heck is this retreat about? Well, I am all about raising strong adult children that are truly well-rounded and well-formed. That starts with you and me. The common assumption is that raising strong adult children is about being good and following all of the rules. In this retreat, I add this to the mix: I think it’s more about being loved. So in session number one, I share how I spent two decades of my life trying super hard to follow the rules. I wanted to be a good wife, mother, daughter and friend. I kept trying to learn more doctrine, more Catholic Truth, more knowledge. I thought that more input would create a better Lori. Guess what? More input just created a Much Prouder Lori (and not in a good way). What changed? In a word, everything. My whole world was transformed as I realized that there is a “first half” of the Gospel Message which I had never really explored. I share all of that in the first session of this retreat. In the second session, I share how the two parts of the Gospel Message relate to our mothering. It’s crazy. Absolutely crazy. You will love the parallels AND if you are like me, the “pivot” you make will change your entire family life. Finally, I added a third session for those that want to go on a deeper walk with me. Okay, so what’s the cost of this retreat? It’s free. Yep. It’s my gift to you. How long will it take? Well, each session is about 30 minutes long, but you will probably need to add in some “steep time” as you go over the discussion questions. What will you gain? A new perspective on who you are and more importantly, how that affects your family and how you relate to them. In this retreat, Radical Love is put at the core of the transformation process. And as you let that in, it will change how you interact with your people. Enroll here: Mother Retreat.
As always, I would love to receive your thoughts and comments as you go along. I love this life. I am grateful you are in it! Happy June!! Love, Lori ****************************************************************** UPDATE Fall 2022: After I recorded this online retreat, I thought my life would continue in a nice, easy motion as a stay-at-home mom. Surprisingly, I was asked to teach Middle School ELA at Holy Spirit Catholic School. Even more shocking, I said yes. When I created this online retreat I had the idea that I would update it in August or September. That won't be happening, since I am in teacher mode, but the content is still relevant.
